Shape – The Glass House

Right well, first off, I have not been posting here enough at all. I said I would and I failed. Thank you, Andy, for keeping this blog alive. You’ve posted some awesome stuff already!

The different between Andy and myself is, well, we do have a slightly different taste in music. So this album I’m posting here is not something he would post. It’s been a while since I’ve posted any rap myself. I apologise to any rap fans out there. Don’t worry, there’s plenty more to come!

So yeah, Shape is a rapper from New Jersey in the US. He’s a white guy who looks like he should be studying for a PhD in philosophy…but when listening to his voice, I wouldn’t have thought of him as some nerdy white guy. He has a great rapping voice, and the music is far from boring. I want to turn it up loud and drown in it.

What generally captures me about rap is the quality of the background music, and this is definitely good quality stuff. He does it all himself, but you don’t get a DIY feel from it at all. It’s professional and very polished. There’s atmosphere to it too. It makes me want to nod along and keep pressing the volume up button, but it also makes me feel. I’m very impressed, and if you’re into rap, you should DEFINATLY download this, especially if you like your rap with a more experimental edge. We’ve got all different instruments and sounds thrown in there. It’s great stuff.

Shape currently has two records available for free download. The Glass House is what seems to be his most loved record (and his second), but if you’re interested in checking out his first, go here.

Charlie Hilton – Good Food

Charlie Hilton is a 21 year old hip-hop producer from london, and this is his first (and only) mixtape released thus far. It’s good stuff and keeps your attention throughout. If you’re a fan of hip-hop, check this out…it’s awesme stuff and there’s a whole lot to it and some nice varied tracks with lots of great samples. This may be my favorite of all the hip-hop stuff I’ve posted.

Del Tha Funkee Homosapien – Funky Man

Yes, that’s right, someone you’ve actually heard of on this blog!

I’m feeling pretty lazy today, hence why I’m posting this. Del Tha Funkee Homosapien needs no introduction, and thus I can just give you the link without the blathering I normally do along with it.

Click the picture if interested. You will be taken to a page where you enter your e-mail and are send a URL. Click that URL and you’ll be taken to download via an integrated flash downloader. Once downloaded, simply decompress in the normal way.

Braintrust – The Bailout

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

This is the first album I’ve posted here that I couldn’t get a picture for (excluding The Hostiles, although that was because the record had no album art). Because of the lack of a picture many of your eyes won’t be caught by this post, which is a shame, because out of all the rap I have posted on here so far, this is my favorite.

It’s got a very…”underground” sound. It’s quite obviously not only influenced by rap music alone, and a lot of different instruments and sounds are thrown into it. I personally hear a pretty strong Del Tha Funkee Homosapien influence throughout the album (especially in the second track Mission From God), although you may totally disagree with me there. The music is highly diverse regardless of what you may deem it is influenced by, and the two guys that make up Braintrust provide some pretty damn good vocals, rapping together in harmony (and sometimes in unison) with great effect.

The Bailout is the first release from Just Plain Ant’s record label, Just Plain Sounds. It shows a lot of promise for the label. Download it here.

Cartel – Pray for Glory

No no, this is not the bland pop-rock band! Our Cartel here is a hip-hop producer from some place called Long Pond in the US. Each track features a different MC (well, almost…some have featured on a few tracks) and therefore each track has something fresh to offer.

It’s a pretty good record, and if you’re into more mainstream rap you’d probably enjoy this, since I feel this has more similarities with more mainstream stuff than it’s underground peers do. Nevertheless, it is a good record filled with good-sounding rapping and highly listenable background music. Worth a listen regardless of your preferences (well, supposing you like rap, that is!).

Just Plain Ant – Dig Deep

Just Plain Ant is a hip-hop producer from Virginia, USA. This is one of the two records he offers online for free, and I’d describe it as ambient/chilled rap. It’s real nice to listen to, and puts one in a pleasant mood, especially now that it’s summertime (OK yes, I am ignoring the Aussies here!). It’s the perfect summer chillout mix and it’s got enough variation to keep one’s attention (which is rare in a lot of relaxed music like this.)

I have uploaded Dig Deep, however, if you find you think the guy is awesome and want more (and are unable to find it yourself/can’t be bothered), you’re free to request I upload it too, which I’d be happy to do.

Pr1me – The Transformation: Perception is Deception

This is a rap mixtape, and because the website it comes from is down at the moment, I can’t really give you a lot of info on it!

A whole load of people seem to contribute to it, and it contains a good mix of rapping and singing, as well as having pretty decent background music.

I fiddled with the track tags when I downloaded, because it was all in caps and looked pretty messy, however my editing takes away the names of those involved in each track, so here is the official track title list from the website:

01) DJ Warrior Intro
02) Sabotage Me. – Prod. By Focus (Feat. Butch Cassidy)
03) Touch – Prod. T-Nasty (Feat. Chevy Jones)
04) Give Me The Grind – Prod. By Thayod
05) Now Here We Are – Prod. Dae One (Feat. Butch Cassidy & Taje)
06) Dying To Floss
07) Machine Gun Funk – Prod. Sputnick
08) DJ Warrior Interlude
09) Megatron – Prod. By Jake One (Feat. Bishop Lamont)
10) Pray Ave. – Prod. By Dae One (Feat. Big Wy, CPO Boss Hogg, & Bokey)
11) Thank You – Prod. By Diverse (Feat. Mike Ant)
12) Swagger Remix – Prod. By Jedi Jared Moore (Feat. Butch Cassidy)
13) Go Hard – Prod. By Flame Child (Feat. Skubie)
14) Pay Off – Prod. By Creator
15) Change – Prod. By P Rod (Feat. P Rod)
16) Ego – Prod. By T-Nasty (Feat. Vanessa Marquez)
17) DJ Warrior Interlude 2
18) Keep It Movin – Prod. By P Rod
19) Caught Up – Prod. By Peblo (Feat. Bada Bing (Pretty Toney) & E Money (Fratt House))
20) DJ Warrior Outro

I’ll edit this entry with more info if the site gets back online, but for now, don’t let the mysteriousness stop you from downloading, because this really is a good rap record…one of the best I’ve heard in a while even!

Tracky Birthday – Animal Audition

Tracky Birthday is a guy from Germany who does comedy-rap. He’s had comparisons to Weird Al, but I pay Weird Al no real attention, so I can’t really comment on that.

This is his first and only album, and is really bloody catchy. Each track is different and each track has something totally new to catch your attention. He’s a good rapper, despite doing it all for laughs, and the music sticks in your head too. CHECK IT OUT
