Charts And Maps – Enemies of C. Frias
Thursday, July 23rd, 2009Charts And Maps are a post-rock band from LA. For those of you who don’t know anything about post-rock, it pretty much contains no vocals, and this record is no exception.
But don’t let that put you off. I, myself, am anything but a big post-rock fan. The only post-rock I’ve ever even found myself enjoying until now was We vs Death, which I posted here a few months ago.
Charts And Maps are anything but generic. They have a real jazz influence going on, and the instruments keep the record interesting the whole way through. It’s a 4 song EP and lasts a total of 28 minutes, so it’s not filled with droney, overly-long epics of tracks. If you’re into the genre you’ll love it, and if you’re not, give it a chance anyway, I say!
Mamushkas – MHKS
Sunday, July 19th, 2009Mamushkas are a rock band from Argentina. This was their first release, a 19 minute long EP. It was released in 2004 and since then they have also released one full length album, although it is not available for free.
So I can’t really go into much of a description about Mamushkas. It’s rock music. Rock music sung in Spanish, just to warn those if you who aren’t big on not understanding their music. It’s fun and it verges on pop-punk half the time. I don’t give a crap that I can’t understand it, because I was entertained for the whole 19 minutes and happily listened again a few more times straight after.
If you’re into fun/fast rock music or pop-punk even, give this little EP a try. It’s well-polished and a joy to listen to. Trust me.
Atomic Cat – Trance ‘n’ Dance
Friday, July 17th, 2009Atomic Cat is a dance act from France. I can’t get you any more info than that for two reasons. 1. Everything I find about them/him/her is in French. 2. The website I just launched involved annoying auto-playing music, which resulted in my speakers being blasted. People are sleeping at the moment, so this isn’t something I could be bothered to put up with.
So to focus on the sound of the music…it’s easy to just call it “dance”, because that really is what it is…but it’s not your generic, mainstream dance music…I guess it’s more “underground”, although with enough of a mainstream sound to keep it accessible to those of us who aren’t hardcore club-goers. This record is split genre-wise into two sections: there’s the first few tracks, labelled simply as dance and there’s the the second part, dubbed as psytrance. I’m not sure if it’s really full psytrance, but there’s enough elements of the genre in there to enable me to call it that without reservation.
I did enjoy this album upon first listen. It’s catchy and easy to listen to, and if you’re into trance/dance/psyctrance/any kind of “club” music, you should give this a listen. Most free dance music is a bit shit, but this is anything but shit.
Del Tha Funkee Homosapien – Funky Man
Saturday, July 11th, 2009Yes, that’s right, someone you’ve actually heard of on this blog!
I’m feeling pretty lazy today, hence why I’m posting this. Del Tha Funkee Homosapien needs no introduction, and thus I can just give you the link without the blathering I normally do along with it.
Click the picture if interested. You will be taken to a page where you enter your e-mail and are send a URL. Click that URL and you’ll be taken to download via an integrated flash downloader. Once downloaded, simply decompress in the normal way.
Kismet – Hiatus
Friday, July 10th, 2009This is my favorite record out of my recent postings, I’d say. Of course, I don’t mean that to demean the other postings, because they’re all great, but this is something I fell in love with from the first listen, and I’m not going to hold back in saying this.
Kismet are on the same record label as a number of bands I’ve posted here (We vs Death, Paper Tiger and The Wait). They are from The Netherlands and were formed in 2002. They released two EPs before the album I have posted here. The EPs have a few different songs from this album, so if you like what you hear, tell me and I’ll get those EPs to you too!
Fun fact: out of all the artists I have posted about here, Kismet is the only one with a Wikipedia page. Check it out here if you’re interested.
The music is quite easily defined as indie-rock, although don’t be thinking the music is shallow because of that. It’s deep and melodic with plenty of variation. We have drums, bass, guitars and a piano coming together amazingly well here, creating a dynamic and exciting blend of music.
If you’re into indie music, this is a must for you. There will be no disappointment. Trust me.
The Spectacular Fantastic – Outer Space is Nothing But a Lie
Monday, July 6th, 2009The Spectacular Fantastic is an indie/rock band from Cincinnati, USA. There’s a pretty good ’60s sound going on throughout their music and it’s very pleasing to the ears. It’s well-polished and pretty music, and it definitely worth a listen.
I’m getting lazy with my mini-reviews these days, but this is a really good record, and I wouldn’t be posting it here if it wasn’t. They’re influenced by the beach boys as well as a load of newer bands, and you can really hear these influences. Download now!
Ralph Buckley – Stardust Rain
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009I don’t know much about Ralph Buckley and to be honest his website bugs me too much to bother navigating about. He is no relation to Jeff Buckley as far as I can tell, however! He’s a singer/songwriter anyway and makes some real pretty and catchy folky/indie music with a dash of blues thrown in. If you like this album I’ll upload more. His website offers all tracks as individual mp3s, which is not what I want to offer you people. Request more if you wish and I’ll be happy to upload!
